Frequently asked questions
What is the Recycle Your Electricals campaign?
Recycle Your Electricals is a UK-wide campaign calling on households to stop throwing away or hoarding their old electricals – and start reusing and recycling them.
Who is behind Recycle Your Electricals?
The Recycle Your Electricals campaign was launched in 2020 by a not-for-profit organisation called Material Focus (formerly the WEEE Fund). Our aim is to motivate and support millions more people to recycle their electricals – saving precious resources from being lost forever.
Where does your funding come from?
Material Focus – the not-for-profit organisation behind the Recycle Your Electricals campaign – is funded by producers of electrical appliances.
Where can I recycle old electricals?
Easy – enter your postcode in our Recycling locator. Across the UK there are thousands of points where you can take old unwanted electricals for reuse or recycling. Thanks for being part of the next movement in recycling!
Can you come and collect my old electricals?
Unfortunately we don’t have the infrastructure to collect or accept your old electricals. Simply enter your postcode in our Recycling locator. Across the UK there are thousands of points where you can take old unwanted electricals for reuse or recycling. Thanks for being part of the next movement in recycling!
Can you help my recycling project with funding?
Material Focus supports organisations and research aimed at making it easier for us all to recycle or reuse unwanted electricals. We have just finished our first round of funding and we plan to launch two more funding rounds soon. Sign up for alerts so you’re the first to hear about these – for more information have a read of our Funding page. Alternatively, you can contact us using the form below.
What electricals can I recycle?
Every electrical counts – anything with a plug, battery or cable can be recycled. 75% of all the materials in old electricals can be recycled and turned into things like life-saving equipment, playgrounds or bicycles.
Is it safe to recycle old electricals?
Yes. Some need a little preparation: lightbulbs, for example, can be recycled but certain types have to be thrown away with your normal rubbish – have a read of our Lighting and lightbulbs page for more on that. When recycling mobile phones and smart devices, you’ll need to delete your personal data before recycling or passing them on for reuse – see our ABC guide to Prepare your item.
